Alchemy Theatre will be closing its Tecumseth St. Queen & Bathurst 60 seat venue as of August 31, 2008 after 6 years of operation.
The venue has been heavily booked by numerous independent companies as a rehearsal, workshop and performance venue over the past several years. However the absence of any government funding from the TAC, OAC or Canada Council over its six years has meant that the venue has existed solely through thousands of hours of unpaid labour and tens of thousands of dollars of support by the members of Alchemy Theatre.
This has represented an increasing distraction from the company's own projects and we can regrettably no longer justify the labour of maintaining and operating the venue. We deeply value our experiences with the many theatre artists who have utilised the venue over these past six years, and we find ourselves surprised and saddened by the decisions of the TAC, OAC and Canada Council.
Please note that Alchemy Theatre is not suspending operations and will continue as a classically focused producing company staging theatre at various rental venues in Toronto.
